Giving a child a choice

Some wisdom from Rosa Covington Packard’s book The Hidden Hinge – “When you say, ‘Would you like to do this?’ you should be truly giving him the option to say no as well as yes.” (p. 140)

A better way of negotiating with your child is to give him the sincere choice where both options are acceptable – “Would you like to walk on your own, or shall I hold your hand?”

  1. Yes, that sounds respectful to the child.

Is the “alternative advance” okay?? Parent gives child choice of two alternative either of which is acceptable. “Would you like to wear your red shirt or your blue shirt?” “Would you like to take your bath now or in five minutes?”
